Prototypes of modern hand dishwashers were created in 1886 by Josephine Cochrane. They were presented at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. Cochrane was a wealthy granddaughter of John Fitch, who created steamboats. She created the dishwasher because her servants often were breaking porcelain dishes during the washing. Initially, dishwashers were only used for commercial purposes.
